Google will officially place a bid for the 700MHz spectrum. This new network would create another US-wide network. Google announced today, it’s intent to participate in the auction. The reserve price is $4.6 billion for the 700MHz spectrum. The winner will be required to allow use of any device as well as downloading any application to the respective device. December 3rd is the deadline for prospective bidding, however the actual auction won’t start until January 24, 2008 and could last until March. The most exciting part of this new spectrum is that Google is producing a gPhone and future revision of the Apple iPhone will function on this network. There is a major change happening in the cellphone community.

AT&T CEO Randal Stephenson has promised the obvious… “You’ll have [a 3G iPhone] next year.” So in 2008 we know a 3G iPhone (faster network than the current EDGE) will be released. The timing is up for speculation, but doesn’t the MacWorld Expo, January 15-18th seem like a good place for this type of announcement. Apple has also announced to developers that the iPhone will support 3rd party applications. This timing would help allow Apple to achieve Job’s plan of selling 10 million iPhones worldwide in 2008.
